Welcome Back!! A Few Updates..

Welcome back!

Hope your winter break was restful and rejuvenating. We’ve got a lot of stuff going on this semester and it should be a good one. That said, it is really important that you try to get to our first meeting this semester, taking place this Thursday at 6pm in a third floor classroom. We will be talking about auditions, our clinic on February 7th, candle drive, and other events.

If you are not able to make it, try to keep the morning of Saturday February 7th open, 8:30-3:00ish. There is an awesome clinic by Anthony Maiello going on at BU that we’re going to trek in to called Conducting Nuances: A Workshop in Technique. If you don’t know Maiello, he is amazing. He conducts all his scores without them haha. Whether you are coming to our meeting or not and want to go to this clinic, you MUST register before February 2nd by going to this website (it’s really quick and painless):  http://www.bu.edu/bumo/forms/musiced/

Also, if you want to go on the trip and have not yet given us your $80 deposit, February 1st is the absolute last day we will accept them. The entire cost of the trip will be little to no more than this, thanks to fundraising and a grant.

Also there will be a MCMENC Clinic this Sunday Feb. 1st @ Anna Maria College starting at 12:30pm

Here are some details….

How do you address children with special needs in the Music Classroom? This workshop will focus on how to work with behavioral issues and other, typical problems, in the classroom. Lisa Summer and Brianne Miers will present hands-on exercises, pratical applications and theoretical information about Music Therapy. Bring your questions and issues for discussion!

Lisa Summer, LMHC, MT-BC, is Professor/ Director of Music Therapy at AMC. She has clinical experience with a wide variety of Clientele and has taught at AMC for 13 years. She lectures frequently in Europe and Asia on her clinical specialty, music and imagery, and has written two books, Guided Imagery and Music in the Institutional Setting and Music: The New Age Elixir.

Brianne M. Miers, MT-BC hails from Maine and is a graduate of AMC. She has a private practice in Music Therapy, working works throughout Central and Western Mass., and parts of Connecticut with special needs children, adults with developmental disabilities and the elderly. Her passion is working with children and young adults on the Autism Spectrum.

Join us for a light lunch, a good time with great new experiences!

You’ll be back before the big game!

MCMENC Clinic hosted by…us! UML MENC!

When? October 19th at 1:30pm is our big state-wide clinic with

Dr. Ruthmann here at UMass Lowell

Learn more about him, meet college students from around the state, and eat some good food.

The clinic is:

Hearing Art/Seeing Sound: Composing with Art in the Music Classroom

How do you turn a piece of visual art into composition that lasts over time? What do people see when they look at a piece of art? How can we better understand what our students hear when listening to music? Moving beyond “Pictures at an Exhibition” type projects, this workshop will involve participants in hands-on experiences exploring how creative processes from the visual arts can inform classroom composing across K-12 settings. Participants will spend the first half of the workshop creating original music with visual art using their own instruments and voices. The second half of the workshop will be spent in the UML music technology lab exploring composing experiences that borrow processes from sculpture to help frame loop-based composing experiences. Applications and examples of the use of visual art and composing to illuminate and deepen musical understanding will be shared for use in elementary general through secondary performance-based music classes.

Make sure you are there at our first clinic of the year!!!

MCMENC Kick Off Party at Gordon College

MCMENC is starting an exciting new year, beginning with our kick-off party on September 14th at 2:00 at Gordon College. We’d really love to have as big a statewide showing as possible. And remember, food will be provided!

This will be a time for introductions and meeting one another, as well as highlighting the year’s events. Also, we have begun the tradition of performing for one another for a small portion of the program. We will be in the beautiful Phillips Recital Hall and have a wonderfully talented student pianist to accompany anyone who is interested in playing or singing. This does not have to be terribly formal in presentation nor repertoire, nor do you have to play a solo. We would also love duets, trios, etc.! We really love to see music education majors who have a passion for developing their own art

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow music education majors from other schools!

ALL SHOULD ATTEND! IT WILL BE FUN!!!

E-mail any questions to uml_menc@yahoo.com

LOOK FOR THE SIGN UP SHEET ON THE MENC BOARD ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF DURGIN HALL

SO WE CAN THEN SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WANT TO ATTEND AND FIGURE OUT A CARPOOLING PLAN.

THANKS!
